risks permanent hair removal

Laser hair removal light is not dangerous

To the best of our knowledge, there is no publication or scientific communication on definitive laser hair removal that suggests a risk of cancer. The “lights” (Laser Alexandrite-755 NM) or infrared (Laser Nd: YAG – 1064NM) used for laser hair removal are similar to what a kitchen hotplate emits. This light is simply very pure and concentrated on a small surface, and exposure is very short.

Red and infrared light are specially designed to progressively separate the bonds between DNA protein atoms on a small scale. They therefore do not expose the skin to the direct mutation that could cause skin cancer. Thousands of hair removal sessions on the same spot would have to be repeated for this irritation to lead to a – theoretical – risk of cancer through chronic inflammation.

The light from hair-removal lasers does not expose the various skin layers to any risk. Only a tiny fraction of the beam penetrates more than half a centimetre deep. Here, the hair’s melanin absorbs the laser light and conducts it to the bulb, causing the hair to fall out without harming the skin. On the other hand, prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays (sunlight or artificial sources) or aggressive chemicals (stain removers) can cause skin cancer.
Chronic inflammation of a mole, waxing, depilatory cream or frequent shaving can also trigger cancer.

What are the complications and risks of permanent hair removal ?

The risks of permanent hair removal are extremely limited. Laser hair removal only affects the skin. Due to its wavelength of 755 to 1064 nm, it does not affect any internal organs (muscles, heart, liver, kidneys, ovaries or uterus).

Burns and allergies

Burns and allergies are the most frequent complications. Some are revealed at the time of the treatment, while others appear 24 to 48 hours after the session.

Burns

Although impressive, burns are always superficial. In most cases, permanent laser hair removal causes erythema. This takes the form of a sunburn-like redness that requires moisturizing. That’s why we apply moisturizing cream immediately after treatment. We also recommend moisturizing the area for 24 to 48 hours after treatment.

A burn can be noticed at the time or at the end of the session, and requires simple gestures :

  • The first step is to cool the treated area : place an ice pack on the area for 20 minutes. This stops the process in its tracks (a rapid intervention will promote better recovery).
  • Sun exposure should be avoided during the skin’s recovery phase.
  • Burn marks generally regress within 3 weeks, and no after-effects remain.

Allergy

Generally, within 48 hours of a session, an allergic reaction can occur. This usually takes the form of itching and reddening of the skin. This is why prompt medical consultation (as soon as symptoms appear) is essential to establish a proper diagnosis and obtain a prescription adapted to the reaction. Symptoms will then quickly subside with the right treatment.

While you’re waiting for a consultation, you MUST NOT SCRATCH ! An allergic reaction is random and does not constitute a contraindication to laser hair removal. In case of doubt, don’t hesitate to call back the practitioner who performed your hair removal.

At Be Esthetic, we do our utmost to ensure that your sessions take place in the best possible conditions: laser calibrated to suit each phototype, well-maintained equipment, pre-session consultation with the patient, impeccable hygiene, and meticulous preparation of the skin before the session.
