When you have a breakout or acne, you need to know how to treat it.

And when you have black skin, you need to be careful about the choice of products, which are not all necessarily suitable, and even check your hair routine, which may be the cause of your acne.

to get rid of acne

To help you combat this, we’ve put together a short checklist of 5 habits to adopt to get rid of acne.

1. AVOID OVERLY AGGRESSIVE PRODUCTS

The choice of products is an individual one. If you have sensitive skin, choose products that are suitable for sensitive and intolerant skin (hyper-sensitivity). Overly aggressive products can cause skin inflammation and hyper-pigmentation. Avoid products containing alcohol, or at least limit their use. Essential oils such as tea tree can be a good alternative.

2. CHECK THE COMPOSITION OF PRODUCTS

For years, skincare products have been designed for Caucasian skin. Except that some of the ingredients in these anti-acne products are harmful to black skin. Admittedly, they eliminate the bacteria that cause pimples, but they create other problems for black skin. Benzoyl peroxide, for example, tends to irritate dark skin. As for salicylic acid, it tends to dry out the skin, which will defend itself by producing more sebum. This doesn’t mean you can’t use products containing it, but these ingredients must be present in low concentrations. To find out, look at their position in the list of ingredients: the further down they are, the lower the concentration. My second piece of advice is to avoid using skincare routines with these ingredients in all your products.

3. STOP FIDDLING

We can’t say it enough: it’s better not to touch your pimples, even if it’s terribly tempting. It’s been known to make pimples grow worse and take longer to heal. You can make the situation worse by fiddling with it and trying to break it at all costs. And even if you manage to get rid of it, it will take longer to heal and/or result in the appearance of pigmentation spots.

4. KEEP YOUR PORES OPEN

When buying skincare products, choose those that are labelled non-comedogenic. This means they won’t clog pores.

5. CHECK YOUR HAIR CARE PRODUCTS

If you take good care of your skin but still have flare-ups near your hair (foreheads, temples, near the rabbit’s feet, etc.), then look into hair care products. Certain products such as ointments and oils may be very good for your hair but not for your skin. Alternatively, if you have pimples on your face, check your pillow. Hair product residues could be the cause. So change your pillowcase more often and cover your hair with a silk scarf when you sleep.
