We all dread the smell of sweat. Sweat is often accompanied by an odour that is instantly recognisable, particularly in the armpits. A question I’m often asked during the first consultation: will permanent hair removal solve my underarm perspiration problem?

So here’s what you need to know to understand how to stop the problem of unpleasant underarm odour :

unpleasant armpit odours

Why do we sweat ?

The sweat glands are the organs that secrete sweat, and we eliminate a litre of sweat a day without even realising it. And it’s no coincidence that we sweat easily from our feet, hands, groin, armpits and forehead: the eccrine glands are particularly concentrated there. Linked to the nervous system, they are triggered by exertion (sporting activity) or strong emotions such as stress. Sweating is essential: it ensures that our body is thermoregulated at 37 degrees and eliminates metabolic waste products. When sweat evaporates through the pores of the skin, heat is released and the temperature of the skin and body drops.

So where do unpleasant odours come from ?

Sweat secreted by the sweat glands is naturally odourless. While the eccrine glands are made up of water with a little salt added, the apocrine glands produce milky sweat, which, when it comes into contact with the many microscopic bacteria on the skin, leads to the production of odorous molecules, creating the distinctive smell of perspiration.

So it’s not the sweat itself that ‘smells bad’, but contact with the bacteria on the surface of the skin that consume the sweat and produce the chemicals responsible for the odour.

The presence of hair, particularly in the armpits, can accentuate unpleasant odours. Hair traps secretions and provides an ideal environment for bacteria to multiply.

That’s why permanent hair removal is the best way to put an end to underarm odours!

But be careful, permanent hair removal won’t stop you sweating (sweating is normal, it’s even a sign of good health). It will stop the odour-causing bacteria from remaining confined around the hair.

How can you mask the smell of perspiration ? Tips for limiting unpleasant odours.

-Shower regularly, especially after physical exertion.

-Use perspiration-relieving wipes during the day.

-Wear suitable clothing: avoid synthetic materials and thick fabrics such as heavy canvas. Wear natural materials (cotton, linen, wool).
